International Women's Day

March 2, 2023

Edmonton CREW is looking forward to International Women’s Day (IWD) on Wednesday, March 8!

This year’s IWD campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough by understanding the difference between Equality versus Equity. Learn more here.

Edmonton CREW proudly continues working with professionals — both men and women — of local organizations & businesses as well as charitable initiatives so that we can #EmbraceEquity in the commercial real estate industry. We are inspired by our members’ leadership, determination, strength and compassion that positively impacts and influences our communities.

Women have made considerable gains across the globe over the recent decades. Below are some facts on how far women have come to close the gap (source: Girl Guides, global partner of International Women’s Day)

  • 1718 - Sweden became the first country in the world to grant women limited rights to vote
  • 1903 - Physicist Marie Curie of Poland and France becomes the first woman to win a Nobel Prize
  • 1940 - Quebec becomes the last province in Canada to grant women the right to vote
  • 1974 - Isabel PerĂ³n of Argentina becomes the first woman in the world to be elected president
  • 1998 - The first year that women competed in Olympic hockey
  • 1992 - Roberta Bondar becomes Canada’s first female astronaut
  • 2015 - Saudi Arabia becomes last country in the world to grant women limited rights to vote

Each of us have an important role to support the women in our lives, and these are just some of the ways you can make an impact

  • Celebrate women's achievements
  • Educate and awareness raise for women's equality
  • Call for positive change advancing women
  • Lobby for accelerated gender parity
  • Fundraise for female-focused charities

We want to know — what will you and your organization do to support women on International Women’s Day and every day towards a world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive?
