Jane Woertman, Business Operations Manager, IPA
I’m the Business Operations Manager for Institutional Property Advisors. My team and I assist clients with the acquisition and disposition of multi-family assets and developments across Western Canada. I have worked in the CRE industry for 5 years.
What originally drew you to CREW? Can you share with us a few things you have learned or gained since joining?
When I first started out in this industry, almost all of the women I interacted with encouraged me to join CREW. These women told stories of how CREW was instrumental in creating a supportive network, fostering confidence, and developing leadership skills. They were right! I’ve met like-minded women who have given me doses of encouragement and words of wisdom.
What are your favourite aspects of your job? Can you share what motivates your success and drive?
I thrive on routine but I love that my job pushes me outside my comfort zone – every day and every week is different. I enjoy travelling to different cities and meeting clients in person again (happening more and more these days). I like to provide the best experience, advice and solutions for clients.
What originally drew you to the CRE industry? What advice do you have for someone who is looking for, or is new to, a career in CRE?
I became interested in CRE after moving back to Edmonton and seeing the revitalization of our downtown core. I wanted to be a part of what was going on, it felt exciting! Now that curiosity has expanded to the many different markets and regions my team and I work in.
Our industry has seen a big shift with the ongoing pandemic. What tips do you have for staying connected to clients and colleagues at this time?
Meet with clients and colleagues in person, if possible. Face-to-face interactions are impactful.
What is the best piece of career or life advice you have received?
Say yes and figure it out later!
Outside of work, what hobbies are you passionate about? How do you make sure you maintain time to enjoy them while balancing work and home life?
I love reading and listening to books and staying active with friends/loved ones. The pandemic encouraged me to hone my baking and cooking skills, to walk more, and to try out cross-country skiing. I’m really looking forward to a return to travel, too. I’m a big believer that by carving time out for recreation or hobbies, you will show up better in every other area of your life.
