What originally drew you to CREW? Can you tell us about your path to being on the Board of Directors?

I was originally introduced to CREW in it's founding year during my time as a Graphic Designer at Colliers. Carla Voss, Twyla Purschke, and the other members were spinning up the Edmonton chapter and part of my duties became design and newsletter support for the organization. Fast forward a few years and many of my good friends and colleagues were getting involved. An opportunity arose to chair the Marketing & Communications committee, an area I felt I could make a positive contribution, in 2019. In 2020, a board seat opened up and I was thankful to be nominated into the Director position I hold today!

What is the biggest benefit of CREW for you?

First, I have to say I was initially hesitant to get involved in CREW - not because I didn't think it would benefit me, but rather because I wasn't sure I could bring value for other members. As a member, I can now say I wish I had joined sooner and also, boy was I wrong. CREW has given me the opportunity to prove to myself that my experience, education, and knowledge are very valuable. The confidence I've built participating in events and speaking in board meetings has spilled over into more confidence in myself professionally. The Edmonton CREW board members and members at large are like a group of my own personal cheerleaders and I'm incredibly thankful to them all!

What are your favourite aspects of your job? Can you share what motivates your success and drive?

The number one best part of my job is coaching my team members and seeing them succeed. When they get praise from our internal or external stakeholders, it brings me a ton of joy. Sometimes I'm in a position to have some pretty uncomfortable conversations - not all coaching conversations are easy ones, as any people leader knows well - but when you see that feedback used as motivation for better work and better outcomes, nothing tops that feeling!

Tell us about your best CREW memory to-date.

Edmonton CREW has done an amazing job with the virtual programming throughout the pandemic; however, I'm really looking forward to more in-person events, especially the chance to attend convention since I hear this is where all the best connections and memories are made. Currently, my top memory was our recent Dine Around at Bodega Highlands where our group really connected, shared great conversation, I met new people, and we had an amazing meal.

Do you have advice for someone who wants to join the CRE industry?

If you are a person who thrives in an ever-changing, challenging environment where no two days look the same this is the place for you! The best advice I can give is to jump right in, be open to learning, listening, and watching...joining CRE is like drinking from a firehose of information but if you're patient with yourself on your learning curve a very rewarding career awaits. One of the best parts is how many facets the industry has and how many professions it connects. I love the growth potential and variety within CRE.

Since we're all spending a little more time at home these days, can you share a favourite book, podcast, or show recommendation? Tell us what you love about it.

I don't know about anyone else, but one of the biggest impacts of the pandemic for me has been insomnia and disturbed sleep which in turn affected, well, pretty much everything. I highly recommend a Spotify podcast called Nothing Much Happens; Bedtime Stories to Help You Sleep. They are amazing and I've never slept better - life changing!
