Angela Wu-Kemp, President, Edmonton CREW, Senior Leasing Manager, GWL Realty Advisors
My name is Angela Wu-Kemp and I am a first-generation Chinese – Canadian. My parents immigrated from Hong Kong in the late 70’s and I proud to be born in Canada. Most of my extended family still reside in Hong Kong, with a couple of aunts and uncles in Vancouver, Toronto and South Africa. I began my career in commercial real estate in 2010 in commercial brokerage and now I am the senior leasing manager for GWL Realty Advisors. I manage the leasing of a portfolio of approximately 4,000,000 sq. ft. consisting of industrial and office assets. I am thrilled to be leading Edmonton CREW as 2021 chapter president this year.
What originally drew you to CREW? Can you tell us about your path to being on the Board of Directors?
The membership roster of all the influential women in commercial real estate is the reason why I had joined Edmonton CREW in 2010. I started participating on the committees when I had first joined CREW. During my participation, I found mentorship from a few of the senior women in our industry and they had encouraged me to engage more and apply for a Board position. I was on the Board of Directors in 2014 – 2016 and had taken some time off to have a couple of beautiful daughters and have since rejoined the Board again in 2020 as president elect.
What is the biggest benefit of CREW for you?
CREW had a significant part in propelling my career. The relationship that I had fostered through my connections of CREW provided me resources and mentorship that helped me strategically navigate my career in the industry.
What are your favourite aspects of your job? Can you share what motivates your success and drive?
My favourite aspects of my job are that I enjoy connecting with people and understanding their business, allowing me to identify their needs and requirements, and proposing solutions to them that will help foster their growth and build our relationships.
Tell us about your best CREW memory to-date.
There are so many wonderful CREW memories and its hard to choose one. But the most recent memory of how CREW made my heart swell and beam with pride to be part of this organization was when we debuted the 10 year anniversary video. We had interviewed members, sponsors, and past presidents on why CREW was important to them. It was enlightening to hear everyone’s different perspectives on their thoughts on CREW.
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to join the CRE industry?
Explore all facets of the industry and get an understanding of the different sectors of CRE. Engage in conversation with people of all different backgrounds, age, gender, ethnicity, etc to paint a full picture of where your real interests and passions lie.
Since we’re all spending a little more time at home these days, can you share a favourite book, podcast, or show recommendation? Tell us what you love about it.
I have really enjoyed the podcast “Smartless” with Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman. These guys are light hearted and funny. I’ve also really enjoyed “WTF with Marc Maron”. I find that I’m regularly chuckling quietly as I listen.
