What is your favourite thing about working in Commercial Real Estate?
It’s never boring! I’ve been involved in real estate financing for almost 18 years and after all that time I still come across things I have never seen before. The world of commercial real estate is always changing and I enjoy the part I play in an industry that is always looking for ways to provide innovative solutions for those involved in it.
In what year did you join Edmonton CREW?
I have been a member of CREW for 8 years.
Do you serve on any committees for Edmonton CREW? If yes, please tell us which one and what your role is there.
I am a member of the Education Committee and have been since 2013. It has been a fantastic experience! The Committee is comprised of a great group of women from a cross section of roles in the industry. It is as a result of the diversity in the committee that we are able to present a wide variety of topics to the CREW community with the goal of increasing their knowledge in the various parts of the industry.
What are 3 reasons you would encourage a colleague to join CREW?
In no particular order, networking, personal development and support. Through my involvement in CREW I have developed great friendships, discovered business opportunities that otherwise may not have come my way, and learned that there it is a safe environment to ask those “stupid” questions. CREW members support each other and who can’t use more of that in this crazy world.
What is your best CREW memory to-date? (This could be funny, helpful, transformative, inspirational, etc.)
I have several great CREW memories, but the one that sticks out the most is the very first CREW event I had ever attended. I had been doing a bit of research to find of what kind of industry organizations/associations were in the Edmonton area that I might be able to get involved in, and discovered that there was an organization called CREW that supported the advancement of women in commercial real estate. In speaking with a business associate I discovered that she was a member, and she invited me to attend a function as her guest. I accepted the invitation not really knowing what to expect. I was a bit worried about being the new person entering into environment where there were already well established relationships and trying to “break in”. What I found was a group of welcoming, accomplished and intelligent women who were more than happy to share their insights, support and advice.
Finish this sentence: “I would like other CREW members to call me when…”
Well, I would love for CREW members to call me when they have a financing opportunity, of course, but I would also like them to call if they have any questions regarding financing of commercial properties, or any questions about banking in general. I may not have all the answers, but I have colleagues across the country who are experts in all aspects of commercial and personal banking that I can reach out to or, connect them with to find those answers. I would also be happy to hear from anyone with ideas for future Education Committee events.
